The jobs picture is looking up for the Fort Wayne area, according to the latest Manpower survey. Fifteen percent of area employers plan to add jobs in the second quarter. The growth will be strongest in construction and durable goods manufacturing. The Manpower survey area includes Allen, Whitley and Wells counties.
Legislators Keep Talking as Deadline Nears
State lawmakers have resumed talks on
some major issues following a meltdown last week. Senate
Republicans offered a compromise yesterday on legislation to
delay increases in taxes businesses pay into the state's
unemployment insurance fund.
Public Meeting Tonight at Elmhurst
Fort Wayne Community Schools hosts a public information meeting Tuesday at Elmhurst High School. The school could close as part of the District’s efforts to cut the annual budget by 15 million dollars. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school, 3829 Sandpoint Road.
Senate Votes Today on Jobless Benefits
Senate Democrats are hoping the
restoration of about 60 popular tax breaks that expired last year
will help attract at least one Republican to a test vote on
legislation extending jobless benefits. Today's vote is to limit
debate on the measure, cutting off possible filibuster efforts.
Nursing Homes Short on Critical Staff
The Indianapolis Star has found many of
Indiana's nursing homes employ fewer critical staff members than
are needed to care for their often frail residents. Its
investigation shows staffing levels are particularly low at the
state's large number of for-profit nursing homes.
